The James E. Clyburn Golf Center, located in the heart of downtown Columbia, is now a recognized LPGA* USGA Girls Golf Program Site. The only national initiative of its kind, Girls Golf is administered through a partnership between The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Foundation and the United States Golf Association (USGA), both non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organizations. LPGA* USGAGirls Golf prepares juniors for a lifetime of enjoyment of the game and provides a solid foundation for girls who want to play for fun with friends and family, to compete at the high school, college, and/or local, state and national levels or to learn for future career purposes, both inside and outside of the golf industry.
Sally McDaniel, the Golf Programs Supervisor for The Columbia Parks & Recreation and the Executive Director of The First Tee of Columbia said, “Golf has opened so many doors for me both socially and professionally. I don’t want young females to miss out on an opportunity to be involved and influenced by this sport. It was very important to me from the beginning to establish a strong Girls Golf program here in the Columbia area”.
Girls Golf programs focus on inspiring girls to feel confident, build positive self-esteem and live active and healthy lifestyles by incorporating the “Five E’s of Girls Golf” into their curriculum. The trademarked “Five E’s of Girls Golf” include: Empower, Enrich, Engage, Exercise and Energize.
The Clyburn Golf Center, already home to The First Tee of Columbia, is proud to extend its junior golf programming and join more than 270 communities across the United States who host such programs. The LPGA* USGA Girls golf now reaches 30,000 girls through the game of golf each year. Sally says, “I asked the girls participating in junior golf programs, ‘What would make this more fun for you’ and the resounding answer was always ‘I wish there were more girls here’. Adding this program is crucial to the development of the game at the grass roots level and we’re super excited to kick it off here in the heart of Columbia”.
The Girls Golf Day kick-off will be held at The Clyburn Center on April 18th from 1-4 PM. The kick-off event will be open to all girls ages 5-18. The celebrity coaching line-up will include Chris Brady Wolfe, Brenda McLarnon & Ashley Prange, all professional golfers and former contestants on the Golf Channel's reality show, The Big Break. The current members of the Columbia College Women's Golf Team will also serve as coaches and will be available to answer questions about college golf and their journey from junior golf to collegiate golf.
